Resources
In the wild world of the internet, where cat videos collide with the perspicuity of sage ecologists, we wanted to share our favorite resources to research the best plants native to your ecoregion. With a few clicks, you can discover species that you never knew existed right in your own, or metaphorical backyard.
Polinator Partnership
Here you will find a well-made guide based on your eco-region. You’ll be asked to enter in your zipcode to identify which guide applies to your area.
Homegrown National Park
Find keystone plants for your ecoregion. This site is an initiative by Doug Tallamy, an influential ecologist who has influenced our understanding of how native plants and insects interact and championed the importance of biodiversity for ecosystem health.
Lady Bird Johnson
This site offers a robust list of native plants by state. It isn’t as specific as eco-region, but there are many filters to find plants specific to your site conditions.
Audubon Native Plants
Audubon has a bird-friendly native plant database. To access the information, you must provide your email address and zip code.
Find Your Roots
Also by Pollinator Partnership, this tool gives you access to an enormous database of native plants. You start by providing your zip code, then you have the option to add filters for the types of plants you are looking for. Once at the list, you can download the data to use offline.
NC State Extension
If you are in the Coastal, Mountains, or Piedmont regions shared by North Carolina, their ‘Find a Plant’ tool might become a favorite. You can limit your search to these regions, then exclude problematic features of plants such as invasive, problems for pets, and those causing contact dermatitis.
